Terror in the Heartland

Terror in the Heartland was a free workshop to train reporters, editors and other professional communicators about how to better report on threats to our food supply, air and water. More than 50 people attended the workshop.
The workshop, sponsored by the Health Communication Research Center at the Missouri School of Journalism, featured presentations from media, health and science experts and field professionals. The keynote speaker was Col. Tim Daniel, director of the Missouri Office of Homeland Security.
Topics included:
- The science of agroterrorism and bioterrorism
- Knowing the right questions to ask
- Communicating risk without spreading fear
- Understanding the chain-of-command in the event of an incident
- The economics of agroterrorism and bioterrorism
- New technology in disaster communication and alert systems
Part of the cost of the workshop was underwritten by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, administered through the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency. The event was co-sponsored by the MU Life Sciences Center and Extension and Agricultural Information.
