Dr. Glen Nowak of the CDC Visits MU
Columbia, Mo. (Feb. 18, 2004) - Dr. Glen Nowak, associate director for communications for the National Immunization Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, spoke at several venues at the University of Missouri on Monday, Feb. 16 and Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Sponsored by the Health Communication Research Center (HCRC) at the University of Missouri, Nowak spoke to students and faculty at the Missouri School of Journalism and Sinclair School of Nursing about health communication issues such as immunization and recent epidemics such as the bird flu and Mad Cow disease.
Nowak specializes in communications about adult/child immunization, vaccines, and preventable disease. Before joining the CDC, Dr. Nowak was an associate professor of advertising at the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism. His research interests include consumer processing of computer-mediated and interactive messages, social marketing, health communications, and consumer privacy concerns. His research has been published in Journal of Health Communications, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Direct Marketing, Journal of Current Issues and Research and Advertising, and Social Marketing Quarterly. He received his doctorate in mass communication in 1990 from the University of Wisconsin.
While in Columbia, Nowak was interviewed by several local media outlets, including KMIZ-TV, and KRCG-TV, "The Amy Miller Show" on 93.9 The Eagle. The Columbia Missourian also published a story on Nowak's visit entitled "CDC director touts disease awareness in lecture at MU."
