HCRC Releases “Terror in the Heartland” Educational DVD

Columbia, Mo. (Feb. 21, 2005) - Dealing with disaster is hard enough, but covering disaster could be a task of equally daunting magnitude.

The Health Communication Research Center (HCRC) at the Missouri School of Journalism is releasing an educational DVD titled “Terror in the Heartland” that will help journalists report on natural and manmade disasters by going beyond the traditional five W’s.

The “Terror in the Heartland” set includes three DVDs and is based on a series of workshops held in the Monsanto Auditorium at the Life Sciences Center in October 2004. The DVD collection features video footage of the “Terror in the Heartland” conference, as well as tip sheets, handouts, links of interest and copies of the PowerPoint presentations used by the presenters, who included journalists, public health experts, scientists and academics. Presentations include practical tips on both dealing with and writing about disasters that affect agriculture, health, the food supply, water and air.

“Every newspaper, radio or television station, municipal communications office, or other information outlet could find itself at ground zero of a disaster event,” said Jon Stemmle, HCRC director of strategic communication. “Media play an extremely crucial role in helping communities understand, deal with and recover from a crisis. Through these DVDs, we want to help every reporter or other communicator who is interested to get the resources he or she would need should they be at the center of such a crisis.”

Materials included in the DVD cover a broad range of topics, such as biological disasters, detection and surveillance, post-traumatic stress disorder as result of witnessing and covering terrorism, agro-terrorism, and biological weapons.

The set of three DVDs costs $30, including shipping and handling. To request a copy of the “Terror in the Heartland” DVD, contact the HCRC at (573) 882-6225 or e-mail hcrc@missouri.edu.
