HCRC Grad Awarded $1.5 Million Grant
Columbia, Mo. (May 21, 2004) - A former Health Communication Research Center and Missouri School of Journalism graduate assistant has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), a sub-division of the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Youjin Choi, a first-year assistant professor in the Department of Public Relations at the University of Florida, earned her Ph.D. from the Missouri School of Journalism in 2003 and was influential in the creation of the HCRC. The title of Choi’s grant is “Reducing Oral Cancer Disparities in Florida.”
“It is fantastic that Youjin was able to obtain a research grant during her first year as an assistant professor,” said Kathleen S. Kelly, professor and chair of Florida’s Department of Public Relations. “It took a great deal of courage and hard work.”
While at Missouri, Choi’s mentor was Glen T. Cameron, co-director of the HCRC and professor and Maxine Wilson Gregory Chair in Journalism Research at the Missouri School of Journalism.
“It’s wonderful to see one of our first HCRC grads enjoy such success right out of the starting gate,” said Cameron. “This is a great accomplishment for Youjin and an example of the training and experience our graduate students get while working with the HCRC.”
Choi’s research interests include health communication, public health campaigns, audience analysis, and relationship management in healthcare contexts. She has had articles published in several leading journals, including the Journal of Public Relations Research, Public Relations Review, and Corporate Communication. She also has presented papers to the International Communication Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Her teaching areas include public relations strategy and public relations research. She has professional experience in public relations, advertising, and consulting for nonprofit and public sector organizations.
