(l to r) Linda Grotewiel, OCN and Cathy Price, OCN, RN are looking at the instructions for the research study they are about to participate in at the Cancer Communication Research Center from Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. This usability study was conceived by a team of researchers from the Advertising Department of the Missouri School of Journalism and its goal is to test several instructional modules on Functional Foods and cancer regarding the nurse’s perception of the usefulness of the information, its presentation and its potential to be implemented in their communication with patients.
Cathy Price, OCN, RN while talking into the microphone, providing researchers with valuable feedback regarding educational modules on Functional Foods and cancer, as part of a research conducted by the Missouri School of Journalism. The usability study used the “think aloud’ protocol in which all nurse’s comments about the presented information were audio recorded. At the same time a video camera recorded nurse’s body language and specialized software traced the computer screen activity.
Linda Grotewiel, OCN is starting the usability study on one of the Functional Foods and cancer modules. Simulating a web-based delivered training module, the computer presents information highlights on-screen while an audio recording delivers supplemental information about the specific subject. The nurse is able to control the pace of the slide show to better adapt the information delivery to its own learning ability.
