Research Projects
Rural Youth Tobacco Education
Grant Summary
The proposed study is aimed at gaining a better understanding of adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions about tobacco use. The specific aim for this project is a one-year survey of teens (aged 10-15) and their parents or guardians. The data will build on the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to further reveal the knowledge, key beliefs, and attitudes that influence teens’ behavioral decision-making about tobacco use.
The long-range goal of this project is design effective media messages targeted at adolescents to reduce the number who smoke, prevent smoking start-up, increase smoking cessation, and reduce current smoking among teens. The survey will provide baseline data that not only will help us to better understand how teens make early decisions about tobacco use, but also will provide a foundation for developing effective antismoking messages and programs. We will work closely with teens in subsequent years in developing messages and educational programs to improve communication between teens, parents/guardians, schools, and health care providers about the risks of smoking This“outside-in” or customer-oriented approach in marketing has been shown to be a successful way of addressing an audience’s concerns (Schultz & Barnes, 1995).
